Vibe Coding: What It Is, How It Works and the Tools to Start
Published · How we check
Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in plain language, running what it produces and steering it with feedback, instead of writing or reading the code yourself. Andrej Karpathy named it on 2 February 2025, and Collins Dictionary made it its Word of the Year for 2025. App builders such as Lovable, Bolt, Replit and v0 let you do it without any coding experience; Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Code are the tools developers use; BridgeMind runs several AI agents on one product. Most have a free plan, and paid plans start around $20 a month.

Where the Term Came From
Andrej Karpathy — a founding member of OpenAI and former director of AI at Tesla — wrote on 2 February 2025: “There's a new kind of coding I call ‘vibe coding’, where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists.” He described accepting the AI's changes without reading them and pasting error messages back until things worked.
The phrase spread through 2025, and on 6 November 2025 Collins Dictionary named “vibe coding” its Word of the Year, defining it as “the use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code”.
How Vibe Coding Works
- 1
Describe it
Say what you want in plain language: who it is for, the screens, what happens when someone presses each button. "A habit tracker where I tick off three habits a day and see a weekly streak" is enough to start.
- 2
Let the AI build
The tool writes the code, installs what it needs and shows you a running version. In an app builder you see a preview; in a coding agent you see the files change.
- 3
Try it, not read it
Click through it like a user would. You judge the result by what it does, not by reading every line — that is the "vibe" part.
- 4
Steer with feedback
Tell it what is wrong or missing — "the streak resets at midnight UTC, use my time zone" — and repeat. Each round is a new prompt, not a manual edit.
Vibe Coding Tools and Prices
They fall into three groups. App builders (Lovable, Bolt, Replit, v0) take a prompt and give you a running, hosted app — no setup, no code on screen unless you ask. AI editors and agents (Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) work on code in a project you own, for people who can at least read it. Orchestrators (BridgeMind) run several agents on different parts of one product at the same time.

What It Costs: Plan Your App
The tool is only part of the bill: a real app also needs hosting, a database and email. Pick what you are building and how much you code, and the planner gives the tool, the monthly total and the steps.

The Risks, and How to Handle Them
Security
Veracode tested more than 100 language models on 80 coding tasks: the generated code had a security flaw in 45% of cases, and in over 70% for Java (GenAI Code Security Report, July 2025). Ask the AI to review authentication, payments and anything that stores user data, and never paste API keys or passwords into a prompt.
Code nobody understands
If no one reads the code, nobody knows how it works when it breaks. Before real users arrive, ask the AI to explain each part, and keep the project in version control so you can roll back a bad change.
Costs that grow with use
Plans are flat, but agent use is metered in credits or usage on most tools. Big rewrites burn through a month's credits in days; small, specific prompts cost less.
The last 20%
A demo comes together in hours. Edge cases, payments, emails, hosting and app-store review take most of the time, and that is where a developer's review pays off.
Vibe Coding vs AI-Assisted Coding
The tools are the same; the difference is how much you look at the code. In vibe coding you judge the result by what it does. In AI-assisted coding a developer reads, tests and edits every change the AI makes. A common path is to vibe code the first version, then switch to reviewing once real users, payments or personal data are involved.

Build with AI agents
🇺🇸 Top pick for US buildersBuild real software by directing AI agents — no manual coding.
BridgeMind is the vibe coding platform solo founders use to ship apps in days instead of months. Most crypto exchanges (like Bybit) aren't available in the US — but building your own app has no such limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is vibe coding?
Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in plain language, running what it produces and steering it with feedback, instead of writing or reading every line yourself. Collins Dictionary defines it as "the use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code".
Who coined the term vibe coding?
Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former director of AI at Tesla, in a post on X on 2 February 2025: "There's a new kind of coding I call 'vibe coding', where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists." Collins Dictionary named it its Word of the Year for 2025.
Can you vibe code without knowing how to code?
Yes, for prototypes and simple apps. App builders such as Lovable, Bolt, Replit and v0 run the code for you and show a preview. For anything that handles payments or personal data, have someone who can read code review it before launch.
What are the best vibe coding tools?
Without coding experience: Lovable, Bolt, Replit or v0, which build and host the app from a prompt. With some experience: Cursor or Windsurf, AI editors with free plans. For agent-style work across a codebase: Claude Code, from $20 a month with Claude Pro. BridgeMind runs several agents on one product.
Is vibe coding free?
You can start free: Lovable, Bolt, v0, Cursor, Windsurf and GitHub Copilot have free plans with monthly limits. Real projects usually need a paid plan, about $20–25 a month, plus hosting. The cost planner on this site works out the total for 12 types of app.
Is vibe coding safe?
Not by default. Veracode found security flaws in 45% of AI-generated code samples in its July 2025 report. Keep secrets out of prompts, ask the AI to check authentication and data handling, and get a human review before real users or payments are involved.
What is the difference between vibe coding and AI-assisted coding?
In vibe coding you judge the result by what it does and largely ignore the code. In AI-assisted coding a developer uses the same tools but reads, tests and edits every change. Many people move from the first to the second as a project gets real users.
